The Lambda Phi chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, along with the National Society of Black Engineers, hosted a karaoke night last Tuesday in Lower Flat Tuesdays in The Commons. Many came out to support the organizations in their efforts to gather donations for charity, and many brave souls showcased their talents on stage.
Chloe Thomas, a pre-nursing sophomore, was the first courageous volunteer of the night. Thomas found out about the event from a flyer in the main lobby of The Commons. “This was not my first time doing karaoke so I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t really nervous because I’m here with my friends,” said Thomas. She chose a Britney Spears song and was already looking forward to her next performance: “Obsession” by Frankie J. “It’s my favorite song,” said Thomas.
Friends and classmates hung out to enjoy the good music and refreshments and donate to an even better cause. Ayana Henderson, a senior biological sciences major, helped put the event together. “This event was designed, not only to allow students to showcase their talents, but to wind down from the past few midterm weeks,” said Henderson. “Students were also encouraged to bring canned goods, winter clothes and female hygiene products for families in need.”
The entire room broke out into a sing-along frenzy and dance party multiple times. Henderson got on stage a few times herself, with the help of friends. “Karaoke night seemed like the best way to engage all students because it’s a fun and non-judgmental atmosphere,” said Henderson. “Students really seemed to have a great time while enjoying good conversation and the pizza and beverages we provided.”
After a long night of singing and dancing, Henderson recalled the real reason the event was put together. “We received a good amount of donations,” Henderson said. “Even the slightest bit of good can lead to a huge impact.”
Henderson and her organizations are already looking forward to more successful events. “We were very content with the turn out of this event. It was definitely a success,” said Henderson. “In the future, we hope to collaborate with other organizations on campus and host a study night in preparation for finals.” Sing-along study session, anyone?
