February 3 Democrat members of the Maryland General Assembly announced their intentions to oppose Governor Larry Hogan’s proposed cuts to education. House of Delegates Speaker Michael E. Busch argued that Maryland was failing in its responsibility to adequately support state schools.
February 4 The second-highest member of the Maryland Episcopal Diocese has been indicted with several charges involving the death of a Maryland cyclist last December. Heather Elizabeth Cook was charged with automobile manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene of an accident.
February 5 Maryland native James Brown of CBS News was announced as the winner of the Sam Lacy-Wendell Smith Award for for his contributions to racial equality in sports journalism.
February 6 The healthcare company ViiV Healthcare named Baltimore as one of two target-cities for a $10 million project for HIV research and treatment for gay black men.
February 7 The incarcerated subject of the podcast “Serial” was granted a renewed appeal to his case by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Adnan Syed was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in 1999 and is presently serving a life sentence in Western Maryland.
February 8 Two people were injured in a single-engine plane crash near Fort Meade. 57-year old Jeffrey P. Barnett and 82-year old Thomas L. Cline were in the aircraft when it crashed, and were both flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center soon after.
February 9 The Maryland Transit Administration launched its new bus-tracking system for the Baltimore area. MTA system users will now be able to track registered buses along their routes in real-time via the MTA website.
