English department accolades
Department Chair Orianne Smith won First Book Prize in a competition held by the British Association for Romantic Studies. Her work, “Romantic Women Writers, Revolution and Prophecy,” received the prize in July at Cardiff University. Professor Deborah Rudacille will be recognized at the annual Mayor’s Reception and History Honors Event by the Baltimore City Historical Society for her book “Roots of Steel.” Steph Ceraso, an assistant professor of English, won the Richard Ohmann Award for Outstanding Article, for a scholarly piece in the journal “College English.”
Masala replaces Fresh Fusions
Masala, an Indian outlet in The Commons, has opened to mixed reactions. Formerly the location of a vegan outlet, the newly-named location offers rice bowls, naan and other Indian staples. See our editorial on page five.
Hrabowski writes on work force preparation
Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC, wrote an editorial for the “Pacific Standard” on preparation of those in STEM fields for postgraduate life. His thesis: global economic and demographic shifts are changing companies’ expectations for employees, and universities need to adapt by redesigning courses and providing mentorship.
