On Monday, April 20 the SGA’s Election Board posted two notices on MyUMBC detailing rule infractions by the Jankoski-Amsini and Corbett-Robier presidential campaigns. Both of the campaigns were found in violation of Election Rule #9, which requires candidates to file all organization and student endorsements with the Election Board prior to using them to promote their campaign.
The notices stated that “In the interest of transparency and accountability, this year the Election Board will make public every time it finds a candidate has violated Election Rules and issues a sanction in response.”
A complaint was reported to the Election Board that Kelly Robier posted two pictures to Facebook promoting the endorsement of UMBC students without filing the proper paperwork with the Election Board. The posts in question have since been removed. The Corbett-Robier campaign accepted full responsibility for violating the rule.
Correspondingly, a complaint was reported to the Election Board that Anthony Jankoski posted a picture to Facebook promoting the endorsement of a UMBC student without filing the proper paperwork with the Election Board. The post in question has also since been removed. The Election Board decided that Jankoski violated the rule.
The Election Board determined that the proper sanction for both campaigns was an official warning. This was decided by a seven person vote in the case of Corbett-Robier and a six person vote with one absent in the case of Jankoski-Amsini.
The MyUMBC posts both ended with an excerpt from the SGA constitution, saying that “All decisions of the Elections Board are final and not subject to appeal.”
Any student may file a complaint about potential violations of Election Rules by emailing the Election Board Chair, Evan Leiter-Mason, at leiter1@umbc.edu.
