Sept. 16

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-2, to clinch the American League (AL) East Division of Major League Baseball (MLB). The victory ensured Baltimore’s first division title since 1997 and their second playoff berth in the past three years.

 

Sept. 17

Eric Matthew Frein, 31, is wanted for murder in the killing of one Pennsylvania State Police trooper and the wounding of another. Authorities are offering a $75,000 reward for information leading to the suspect or other suspects.

 

Sept. 18

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford will soon begin chemotherapy to treat a rare and aggressive cancer, a doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital has said. Ford, who recently announced he will not run for re-election, will start chemotherapy by Friday afternoon. His term as mayor ends on December 1.

 

Sept. 19

In a historic referendum vote, Scotland has rejected gaining its independence from the United Kingdom. The overall result was slightly wider than predicted with 55% No to 45% Yes but the split varied across areas of the country.

 

Sept. 20

The Secret Service has increased security around The White House after a man with a knife was able to jump the fence and make it into the presidential residence before being apprehended.

 

President Obama has stressed his confidence in the agency’s ability to protect him in the wake of the incident.

 

Sept. 21

Approx. 310,000 people took part in a massive demonstration in New York City to urge for stronger global policies to curb climate change. The United Nations summit on climate change convened in New York this past week.

Sept. 22

Baltimore City Councilmen Waaren Branch and Bernard C. Young submitted a bill that would require city police to where body cameras. Young argued that the bill would help to reduce cases of police misconduct as well as costly court settlements thereof.
