This week’s athlete of the week is volleyball freshman sensation Maddie Schneider. Schneider has brought her talents clear across country to compete for UMBC, hailing out of Olathe, Kan. After her performance this past week, the Retriever faithful sure are glad she made the trip over. At her first collegiate tournament, she put up 34 kills and 11 digs. Her 4.25 kills led the team over the weekend.
Schneider came into her freshman year well-recognized in the volleyball community. In high school, she led her team to a second place finish in the Kansas State High School Tournament. While doing so, she set the Olathe Northwest record in kills with 520, beating her own record she set in 2013 of 445 kills.
She earned all-state honors in both her junior and senior seasons at Olathe Northwest High School, and holds state records in both hitting percentage and kills.
You can next catch Schneider and the rest of the Retrievers in action at home in the RAC Arena Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
