Women’s soccer holds off conference rival in double overtime draw

Women’s soccer played their fourth double overtime game of the season as they opened conference play against The University at Albany at Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday. Both teams scored their only goals of the game nearly back-to-back in the 1-1 draw.

UMBC’s defense performed admirably in the low-scoring game. Albany attempted 22 shots in the long game, with nine on goal, but UMBC junior goalie Jen Nance managed to allow only one goal and had eight saves.

Albany junior Alexa Schneider grabbed the only lead of the day, scoring her fourth goal of the season. On the play, Schneider managed to bypass UMBC’s defense and slip the shot in between a pair of defenders.

The Retrievers were quick to retaliate though, scoring a goal only two minutes after Albany. After the throw in, junior forward Destinee Morris drove the ball to five yards outside the box and tied the game with a shot off the defender’s back.

The goal came off of one of only two second half shots made by the Retrievers. They did manage to put the pressure on Albany early with six shots in the first half, and two nearly scored goals in the same half.

Once overtime began, neither team succeeded in pressuring the other, with only three shots being attempted by both teams combined in the first 10 minutes of overtime. Albany appeared to be dominating in the final minutes of the game with five shots and four corner kicks. Although in the end, they failed to capitalize on this offensive pressure, ending the game in a draw.

This was the fourth double overtime game for women’s soccer and the second ending in a tie with the other two games ending in losses. Meanwhile, men’s soccer has only had one double overtime game so far this year. Last year, women’s soccer only had four for the entire season.

The Retrievers will continue conference play as they travel to face The University of Massachusetts Lowell, Thursday at 7 p.m.
